A new study investigating the relationship between weight and multiple type of stress — whether job-, family-, financial- or psychological-related — has found that individuals who are already overweight are likely to gain more weight.
The research included a group of 1,355 American men and women and found that women and found that women are increasingly affected by more types of stress, particularly when they are trying to cope with difficult family situations and feeling limited by their circumstances.
The study, which appears in the July 15 issue of American Journal of Epidemiology, cited jod demands, more perceived constraints in life, and more strained relationships with family as determining factors.
“This is one of the first studies to explore the relationship between stress and weight gain in a US population,” lead researcher Dr Jason Block of Harvard University said. “Our findings show that stress should be recognised as a threat to the well-being of American adults, especially those who are already overweight.”
For men, weight gain was mostly associated with lack of skill discretion — defined as the ability to learn new skills on the job and perform more interesting tasks — and less decision authority at work, according to the study.
“Our results also highlight apparent sex differences in the influence of stress on weight gain,” the report stated. “ Some stressors outside of work or finances, including general life constrains and strain in relationships with family, were associated with weight gain among women but not among men, suggesting effects on weight from a broader range of life domains on women.”
Individuals who were not overweight but experienced the same types of stress did not gain weight, the study found.
